Small Agency Mentoring Program
Recently I had the pleasure of attending the final meeting for this year of the Small Agency Mentoring Program (SAM). The program has been a terrific success and I enjoyed hearing stories from participants about their journey through the mentoring relationship and what they gained from the experience.
For those of you who have never heard of SAM, the program pairs mentors who are CIOs or Senior Executive level ICT officers from large agencies, with mentees who are CIOs or Senior Managers from small agencies. The program lasts for 12 months and during that time mentees have access to the skills and experience of their mentor to help them develop their capability and progress their career. Mentees also have the opportunity to network with colleagues in the program.
Of course, the benefits of mentoring are two-way. I have mentored small agency participants for the past two years. I believe mentoring relationships have just as much to offer the mentor as the mentee. As a mentor, I have often found value in being able to get a fresh perspective on problems from someone who is aware of the technical or business issues, but not directly involved.
Mentoring programs like SAM are important because they help to build the capability of the APS by strengthening cross-agency relationships and developing future ICT leaders.
